Finish & Fine Carpentry

Help new woodwork belong to the room

Begin with the purpose of the piece and the room around it. Share photographs, approximate dimensions and the material and finish you prefer.

What to have ready

  • Room photographs showing nearby doors, windows and trim
  • What the piece should store or do
  • Approximate dimensions and fixed features
  • Design references, drawings and finish preferences

Explain the everyday purpose

Start with the way you want to use the space. A bookcase, storage cabinet or window bench needs a clear purpose as well as an attractive appearance. Explain what it should hold, who will use it and what currently feels awkward. Reference photographs can show a preference, but they should be accompanied by photographs of the actual room.

Show the room and original details

Show the nearby doors, windows, fireplace and existing trim. Their proportions provide context for the new work. If a moulding needs to match an existing profile, include an intact example and a rough measurement. Explain whether matching the original detail is essential or whether a simpler related design would meet your needs.

Share approximate dimensions

Mark the approximate location and dimensions of the proposed work without treating them as final construction measurements. Show outlets, radiators and other fixed features. If drawings already exist, send the relevant pages and identify their revision. Tell us which decisions have been agreed with a designer and which are still open.

Choose the material and finish

Discuss the finish alongside the shape. Painted woodwork, visible timber and a finish intended to match existing work are different starting points. Describe the appearance you want and show the adjoining surfaces. The material and finish belong in the written scope rather than being inferred from a reference image alone.

Plan installation

For work in an occupied room, explain access and how the space is used. The assessment should also distinguish making new work from repairing original material. A damaged historic element can need a different scope from a new built-in, even when both sit in the same room. The relevant service pages help you choose a starting point.

Prepare a defined proposal

A useful enquiry brings the purpose, room photographs, approximate dimensions and design references together. A reliable price and programme require review of the design, material, finish and installation conditions. Sharing these inputs early makes it easier to discuss a defined proposal without inventing a universal price for custom work.
